Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank cut interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication once the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, which he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its inflation report for last month that showed that prices are going up, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
